Our School

Background

Machen Primary School is officially designated a mixed county primary school catering for the education of children between the ages of 3 to 11.

Machen is a small village situated in the southern part of the Rhymney Valley, approximately seven miles west of Newport and five miles east of Caerphilly.  The school serves a well-established community of a mixture of Local Authority, terraced housing, modern private estates and new detached houses.

The school is a well maintained, traditionally built school. The building dates to the founding of the school in 1908, though much has been completed in refurbishment to further its longevity and appearance.

Currently children are grouped into 6 (mostly mixed age) classes, according to age, in two departments: Foundation Phase (FP) (Nursery to Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) (Year 3 to Year 6).

The Foundation Phase Department consists of three classrooms and a FP hall which is used as a shared activity area. The FP Department has its own entrance, lobby and cloakroom facilities. It also houses the school 'First Aid Area' and staff room.

The KS2 Department consists of 4 classrooms, a central library/work hub which is supported by the pupil librarians. It also houses the kitchen, clerk's room, main hall, KS2 cloakroom and toilet facilities.

Every classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and digital technology ensuring that children’s learning is not only stimulating but also effective.

We believe the school is well resourced and has been continually updated to ensure that it provides a safe and attractive environment to maximise learning opportunities.

The school also has an ECO shelter which is used as a base for learning outdoors and our Cwtsh sensory pod.
